Sometimes, the best flips are the ones that take less than an afternoon. I found this simple wood box at the thrift store for under $7, and the second I saw it, I knew exactly what it needed. It didn't need a heavy, hours-long overhaul—just a quick, stylish refresh to turn it into something beautiful and functional.
With a quick clean, a simple dry-brush layer, a gorgeous transfer, and a spray wax finish, this little thrifted find went from forgotten to fabulous in record time.
Here is how you can recreate this fast and cute project yourself!

The Product List
To get this exact look, here is everything you need:

Design Transfer: Mr. Toad’s Happy Place Small Transfer (Belles & Whistles by Dixie Belle)
Topcoat Sealer: Easy Peasy Spray Wax (Dixie Belle Paint Company)
Tools: A premium synthetic paint brush, a lint-free shop rag, a sanding sponge (optional), and the burnishing/application tool included with your transfer. Want to see what is inside a can of CHALK MINERAL PAINT? Click Here!
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep & Clean
Never skip the prep, even on a tiny project! Thrift store finds carry years of dust, oils, and grime that will keep your paint from sticking.
Mix up your White Lightning cleaner according to the package directions.
Scrub down the entire wood box to remove any residue.
Wipe it down one last time with clean, fresh water to remove any leftover soap, and let it dry completely.

Step 2: The Simple Dry-Brush Technique
Dry brushing is incredible because it adds instant character, lets the natural wood grain peek through, and dries almost instantly.
Dip just the very tips of your dry paint brush into the Drop Cloth paint.
Offload the paint: This is the magic step! Wipe the brush back and forth on a dry paper towel or shop rag until the brush looks almost completely dry. You want barely any paint left on the bristles.
Using light, sweeping strokes, gently glide the brush across the wood box following the direction of the grain.
Let the brush catch the natural raised edges and corners. Because you offloaded the paint, it will leave a beautiful, soft, textured look instead of a solid, heavy block of color. One quick coat is all it takes! Want to watch a detailed video on Dry Brushing? Click here!

Step 3: Applying the Mr. Toad's Happy Place Transfer
Transfers are the easiest way to add high-end, detailed artwork to your furniture and home decor projects without needing a steady paint hand.
Once your Drop Cloth paint is dry (which won't take long at all with a dry brush), plan out where you want your Mr. Toad’s Happy Place transfer to sit on the box.
Cut out the specific portion of the design you want to use.
Carefully peel away the white protective backing paper, exposing the sticky side of the clear design sheet.
Hover it over your box, press it down firmly into place, and smooth it out with your hands. Tip: Once it touches the paint, it sticks, so make sure you line it up carefully!
Use the plastic application tool included with the transfer to rub firmly over the entire design. This forces the graphic to release from the clear plastic sheets and stick to your painted wood.
Slowly peel back the clear top sheet from one corner. If any part of the graphic stays on the plastic, just lay it back down and rub it again.
Once the plastic is off, gently run a soft cloth over the graphic to press down any loose edges (this is called burnishing).
Step 4: Seal it with Easy Peasy
To lock in your beautiful new look and protect the transfer from scratches, you need a quick seal.
Shake your bottle of Easy Peasy Spray Wax thoroughly.
Mist a light coat directly over the box.
Use a clean, lint-free shop rag to wipe it smoothly across the surface, wiping away any excess.
Let it cure. It’s that fast, that simple, and completely protected!

The Final Takeaway: You don't need a massive budget or days of free time to create something gorgeous. Keep your eyes open next time you browse the thrift store shelves—your next quick flip is waiting for you!
