How to make a cheap thrifted box look OLD WORLD apothecary!


Transforming a cheap thrift store find into a timeless, vintage-inspired statement piece doesn’t have to take days or cost a fortune. If you love that moody, timeworn apothecary aesthetic, this quick weekend project proves you can get the look in just a single day—all starting with a thrifted box that cost under $10!

Here is how to take a dated box from drab to authentic apothecary charm step-by-step.

Supplies Needed

Step 1: Prep & Repair

Start by removing any unwanted decorative elements—in this case, dated butterfly moldings that didn't fit the rustic vibe. Once removed, give the entire box a good cleaning to remove dirt and thrift store grime. Fill any remaining holes or surface gaps with Dixie Belle Mud. Let it dry completely, then sand it back until smooth and flush with the surface.

Step 2: Layer the Texture & Base Colors

To build authentic age, layer colors using Dixie Belle Terra Clay Paint and a basic chip brush. Terra Paint is ideal for creating deep, sculptural texture:

  1. Onyx: Apply a base coat of deep black to establish rich, shadow-filled undertones.

  2. Desert Tan: Once dry, stipple and streak Desert Tan over top to mimic aged wood and natural wear. Simple to blend, it's water based.

  3. Prairie Dawn: Smash those colors together, Prairie Dawn across the high points to highlight texture and give it textured finish.

Step 3: Add Organic "Aged" Drips

For that authentic, weathered look that makes a piece feel like it survived a century in an old shop, grab Pine Cone Terra Clay Paint. Load your chip brush, apply the paint slightly near the top edges, and generously spray it with water. Let the wet paint run and drip down the sides naturally.


Step 4: Stencil & Hand-Paint the Details

To give it true apothecary flair, use an IOD stamp to lay down a label design area right where the new hardware will sit.

Step 5: Seal & Hardware

Because Terra Clay Paint remains reactivated by moisture until sealed, protect the finish with Dixie Belle Terra Matte Sealer. This locks in all your drippy, layered goodness while maintaining an authentic, zero-sheen matte finish. Finish it off by installing classic apothecary hardware right over your hand-painted label area.
