My Recent Project: A Small Accent Table in Heaven Sent
I could not wait to put these new colors to work! I decided to test out Heaven Sent on a small accent table, and the result is stunning.
The rich plum tones in Heaven Sent brought out every intricate carved detail on the table. It turned what was a simple, forgotten piece into a sophisticated statement feature for my home. The finish went on like butter and dried to a silky, low-sheen finish without needing a separate sealant or wax!
How to Apply Dixie Belle Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint
If you haven't used Dixie Belle’s Silk line before, it’s slightly different from traditional chalk paint. Because Silk features a built-in primer AND a built-in topcoat, following the right prep steps will ensure your finish lasts for years!
Here is the step-by-step process for a flawless application:
Step 1: Clean & Degrease
Thoroughly clean your piece using Dixie Belle Pristine Clean (or White Lightning) to remove any grease, dirt, or furniture polish buildup. Rinse the piece with clean water afterward to remove any leftover cleaner residue, and let it dry completely.
Step 2: Scuff Sand
Unlike chalk paint, Silk paint needs a slightly scuff-sanded surface to grip onto properly. Lightly sand your piece with medium-to-fine sandpaper (around 220-grit) to break the gloss or shine. Wipe away all remaining sanding dust with a damp tack cloth. (Note: If you are painting over slick surfaces like glass, metal, or laminate, apply a base coat of Dixie Belle Bonding BOSS first!)
Step 3: Apply with a Dry Synthetic Brush
Use a high-quality dry synthetic bristle brush, I like the SCARLET (do not wet your brush or thin Silk paint with water!). Apply the paint in long, smooth strokes following the wood grain. Avoid overworking the paint as it begins to lay flat.
Step 4: Dry & Recoat
Allow your first coat to dry for at least 2 to 4 hours. Silk paint dries from the outside in, so patience is key! Apply your second coat for rich, full coverage.
Step 5: Let It Cure
Because Silk has a built-in topcoat, no extra sealing or waxing is necessary! While it will be dry to the touch quickly, allow 21 to 30 days for the paint to fully cure into its maximum durable finish before heavy everyday use.
