From Dated to Dazzling: Transforming a Secretary Desk with Paint and a Transfer

Melissa Geskie

Do you have an old piece of furniture that's just not working for you anymore? Maybe it's outdated, out of style, or just plain boring. Don't throw it away! With a little imagination and some paint, you can give it a whole new lease on life. In this post, I'll show you how I transformed a dated secretary desk into a show-stopping piece using Dixie Belle Paint's Hampton Olive Silk paint and the Bohemian Dream transfer.

The Before

This secretary desk was definitely in need of a makeover. The wood finish was dull and scratched, and the overall look was just blah. It was the perfect candidate for a DIY transformation.

The Inspiration

I wanted to create a piece that was both stylish and functional. I decided to go with a bohemian vibe, using a bold color and a fun transfer.

The Supplies

The Process

  1. Prep Work: The first step is to prep your piece. Clean with White Lightning. Rinse. Lightly sand the entire desk to remove any loose finish and create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Apply Mud to repair if needed, when dry you can sand back. Clean the desk with a tack cloth to remove any dust from sanding.

  2. Painting: Now for the fun part! Apply two coats of Hampton Olive Silk paint to the desk, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. This paint goes on smoothly and provides excellent coverage.

    • Dixie Belle Silk Paint Instructions: Apply thin, even coats, allowing 2-4 hours of dry time between coats. For full coverage, 2 coats are recommended.

Transfer Application: Once the paint is dry, it's time to add the transfer. Carefully cut out the desired sections of the Bohemian Dream transfer. Remove the clear backing and position the transfer on the desk. Gently rub the transfer with the enclosed tool to adhere it to the surface.

  • Dixie Belle Transfer Instructions: Ensure your painted surface is completely dry. Remove the protective sheet from the transfer. Place the sticky side of the transfer onto your furniture. Gently rub the transfer with a transfer tool or your fingers to adhere it to the surface. Carefully peel away the top sheet.

  • Sealing: To protect the paint and transfer, apply a coat of Dixie Belle Clear Wax. Use a lint-free cloth to apply the wax in a circular motion, then buff with a clean cloth.

  • Gilding: For an extra touch of glam, I gilded the balls of the feet with gold leaf. This step is optional, but it really elevates the piece.

  • Finishing Touches: Step back and admire your handiwork! You've just transformed an old, dated piece into a stunning focal point.

The After

I'm so happy with how this secretary desk turned out. The Hampton Olive Silk paint is the perfect pop of color, and the Bohemian Dream transfer adds a touch of whimsy. The gilded feet add a touch of elegance. This piece is now a true reflection of my style.

Tips and Tricks

  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different colors and transfers.

  • If you're unsure about a color, test it out on a small area first.

  • Take your time and enjoy the process.

Conclusion

With a little creativity and some elbow grease, you can transform any outdated piece of furniture into something beautiful. So next time you're thinking about throwing something away, consider giving it a makeover instead. You might just surprise yourself with what you can create.
