The Truth About Trust: Why I Choose the Brush Over the Filter

I’m a social media coach & strategist. My job is literally to help businesses grow online. But lately, I’ve felt a deep restlessness, a kind of digital exhaustion that I know many of you feel, too. It’s driven by the constant, aggressive push of perfection—a world where every image and video is AI-edited, smoothed, and hyper-saturated until it feels completely meaningless.

Here’s the truth I’ve learned from six years of building brands: synthetic content is eroding trust faster than any algorithm can keep up. People see A.I. and lose trust!

The Dangerous Illusion of AI Perfection

In almost 2026, it's easier than ever to polish content using AI. With a few clicks, you can erase flaws, change backgrounds, or turn a decent video into a hyper-stylized short film. But as consumers, we’ve developed a sixth sense for this kind of visual manipulation. When you use AI to "perfect" your product photos or videos, you're not just enhancing them; you're creating an expectation your physical product can’t possibly meet.

That gap between the edited ideal and the real-life experience is what kills brand loyalty.

When people lose trust in your visuals, they lose trust in your brand. They start wondering what else you’re hiding or exaggerating. For small businesses, that connection is everything. We can't afford to be seen as inauthentic, especially when we're competing against mass-market filters.

My Sanctuary: Going Rogue with a Dresser

For me, the antidote to this digital chaos isn't logging off—it’s rolling up my sleeves and getting paint on my hands.

My work as a furniture artist, saving pieces from the dump and giving them new life, is more than just a side hustle; it’s where I find my center. The feel of wood grain under my fingertips, the slow, intentional strokes of the brush—it makes me whole, peaceful, and happy. It's real work in a real world.

Recently, I had an antique dresser. The plan was simple: paint it a quick, popular neutral, photograph it, and get it out the door. It was a business decision. But the moment I prepped the surface, I felt that familiar, dull weight of boredom and restlessness. I couldn't do it.

Knowing that hand-painting is my jam, the thing that sparks creativity and joy, I decided to go rogue. Using my Dixie Belle Paint products I put the business plan aside for a moment and let the piece speak. I introduced soft blues and earthy creams, blending them by hand to create a serene, layered patina that no AI filter could replicate. It took longer, but the result was a beauty that felt genuinely mine. Want to check out a video of the process? Click here!

The Power of Being True (My 2026 Strategy)

That dresser wasn't just a sale; it became a testament to the core philosophy that works for me and the brands I coach: authenticity is the highest performing metric.

My success—and the success of my clients—isn't built on chasing synthetic perfection; it's built on:

  1. Showing the Process: Highlighting the human hands and hard work behind the product (even if it means showing the paint splatters or a quick, unedited video).

  2. Embracing Imperfection: Acknowledging that not every project is perfect, which makes your brand relatable and honest.

  3. Prioritizing Connection: Creating content that educates and genuinely engages, rather than just selling.

Ready to Find Your Authentic Edge?

If you are a creative or small business owner looking to truly level up your social media in 2026 by focusing on authenticity and high-value connection, I’m available for 1:1 coaching sessions. For a more affordable and self-paced option, I also run a private, self-led group on Facebook where you can get the tools and community support needed to implement these strategies and build a brand people trust.

If you’re burnt out on the digital rat race, remember this: the best thing you can sell is you. Your skill, your honesty, and your unique, unedited perspective. Put down the AI editor and pick up the brush—or the camera, or the tool—and let your true self shine through. That’s what’s really working in 2026.
